Odyssey Rat Race: June 15, 2024

All events are subject to Coast Guard permit approval.

We’re thrilled to announce that the Odyssey Rat Race will return for a third year, and we have added a brand new distance option to bring even more fun to open water swimmers of all skill levels.

What is the Odyssey Rat Race?

The Odyssey Rat Race is a special 3k (1.86 mi) in Marin County. The course starts from McNears Beach, goes around a buoy, and then run parallel to shore to Rat Rock Island, and then all the way back to McNears Beach.

Starting in 2024 for the June 15 Odyssey Rat Race, a new distance option is available for swimmers. In addition to the 3k (1.86 mi) race, there will be a 1.5k (0.93 mi) course. This course will turn at a buoy before reaching Rat Rock.

Swimmers are provided with official times and winners are announced at the conclusion of the race, where swimmers and their families are invited to join a catered lunch, with food provided for free for all participants and available for purchase for spectators.

The Odyssey Rat Race is open to all experience levels, and no membership is required. Any swimmer comfortable swimming for two miles is welcome to participate.

The first Odyssey Rat Race was held on August 20, 2022, and it was a fantastic event!

We would like to thank our coaches, paddlers, organizers, and of course, the 51 athletes who competed in the event! We are currently finalizing times and acquiring additional photos from the event.

Thankfully, the swim ended up happening on a warm and sunny day, with some wind picking up halfway through the swim. All 51 swimmers successfully completed the swim. The swim started at McNears beach, went out around a buoy, and headed parallel to shore to Rat Rock Island and all the way back to the beach. “We are already getting excited about doing it again next year, bigger and better,” says Odyssey Founder Warren Wallace.
