What’s the Temp? The East Bay is Warming Up!
The most common question we receive in the late winter and spring from members of the open water swimming community is, “What’s the water temp?”
So what is it?
Berkeley, California is our home for Odyssey Tuesday and Sunday Berkeley swims. Berkeley makes for a popular destination for swimmers, with a beautiful coastline and mild climate. Temps near the Berkeley Marina are usually a bit higher than those near Alcatraz Island, where we host Odyssey Alcatraz swims. Of course, the water temperature in Berkeley can vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions. As we’re writing this in late February, the water temperature is in the low to mid 50s. Today, February 24th, the water temp is 53 degrees.
Knowing what temperate you’re comfortable with is key to enjoying open water swimming. While you may find this temperature less than ideal for swimming, some of our swimmers enjoy cooler water temps, which comes with additional benefits.
It’s Heating Up!
From February to April, there is a large jump in water temp in the East Bay. While three degrees may not seem like a big jump, if you’ve experienced open water swims at both 53 and 56 degrees, then you know the impact a few degrees can make on your swim.
In the summer, the water temp in Berkeley can reach up to 68°F (20°C), making it a more comfortable for our swimmers. You can always check for an approximate water temp of the Berkeley Marina here.
To Wetsuit or Not to Wetsuit?
Wetsuits are recommended but not required. Whether you feel more comfortable with or without a wetsuit depends on your level of comfort with the temperature. We have swimmers who prefer to wear a speedo and others who buy or rent a wetsuit. If you do wear a wetsuit, bring Glide or lubricant to avoid chafing.
