Question: What is the “Cutoff Time” for an Odyssey Alcatraz Swim?

In 2023, Odyssey will host 6 Odyssey Alcatraz swims. Each Odyssey Alcatraz swim brings just under 100 swimmers to just outside of Alcatraz Island to swim approximately two miles to San Francisco. This challenging swim is a unique, scenic, and historic experience that attracts athletes from around the world.

Swim Support

Odyssey has a team of support paddlers that assist in escorting swimmers, and if necessary in rare situations, repositioning or removing swimmers from the water. Each support paddler stays near a group of swimmers to ensure they are not in need of assistance and clear of tankers and other boats.

Is There a Cutoff Time?

A common question we receive from prospective Odyssey Alcatraz swimmers is in regards to a possible “cutoff time” for completing the swim. While other organizers may impose a time limit to complete swims, Odyssey does not currently have a set cutoff time for Alcatraz swims.

“Our aim is to guide swimmers across a moving body of water safely,” says Captain Taylor. “One aspect of this aim requires paddlers to never leave a swimmer behind,” he continues. This means that if a swimmer is unable to stay relatively close to other swimmers, a paddler is forced to leave the pack to stay with that swimmer, putting additional responsibilities on another paddler.

In this instance, the swimmer may be repositioned to help them safely complete the swim and provide needed support to other swimmers.

When Extra Support is Needed

What if a swimmer is concerned about falling behind and needing extra support?

Swimmers have the option to hire their own designated paddler. The paddler will be vetted and briefed by the Odyssey team before the swim. This option gives the swimmer all the time they need and relieves them of having pressure to keep up with the other swimmers.

“While safety is always the primary focus, we want EVERY swimmer to have the opportunity to finish and enjoy their Odyssey Alcatraz swim,” says Captain Taylor. Odyssey swims could have a cutoff if needed to ensure the safety of swimmers in the future, but we will continue to work to make sure every swimmer gets the best experience possible.

If you feel that you may need extra support or may be a bit slower than the rest of the pack, just let us know ahead of time and we will detail your options and brief our paddlers.
