Water Temperatures for Berkeley Swims in the East Bay (Chart)
The Odyssey Open Water Swimming community is diverse, with swimmers coming from across the world with different needs and preferences. When we recently asked the community what temperature they prefer to swim in, we received answers from 38 degrees to 80-90 degrees. Currently in the midst of colder temperatures, the number of swimmers for each of our swims, which continue rain or shine, begins to decrease until the temperatures start to rise. To help you and fellow swimmers gauge when you’ll be most comfortable joining us off the Berkeley Marina for Odyssey Berkeley swims, we tracked the temps during swims last year to give you an idea of what to expect in 2020.
As we approach the end of February, as you can see by the chart above, water temperatures begin to rise quickly. In 2019, we reached 60 degrees in the water by the start of April, which is the most common preferred water temperature for open water swimming in our years of experience. The water temps continue to rise until around October as fall approaches. Here in the East Bay, we get at least six full months of water temperatures that average above 60 degrees.
