“Swim Wild” Short Film Review
“It (swimming in the wild) connects you to a part of yourself you don’t usually have access to.”
Open water swimming is an outdoor activity that is rightfully gaining popularity around the world. Here at Odyssey Open Water Swimming, we’ve broken several records in the last 12 months due to the rise in popularity of open water swimming, including having 73 swimmers join us for a Sunday Berkeley swim and 139 swimmers join us for our last public Alcatraz swim of 2019 in September.
Near London, the “three wild swimming brothers” started swimming in the open water several years ago. They were inspired by their grandmother, who encouraged them to connect with and enjoy the outdoors. The three brothers set out to complete a 140 KM swim of River Eden, which has a special place in the hearts of the brothers, whose farm borders the river.
The three brothers manage a brand, including a YouTube Channel, titled “The Three Wild Swimming Brothers.” The brothers published a short film on their channel in 2018, called “Swim Wild.”
“There are a million clubs and a million bars, but nothing that replicates that sense of freedom.”
The short film details how the three brothers, Jack, Calum, and Robbie Hudson, came to fully embrace open water swimming as adults and have conquered some of the most challenging swims on the planet, including swimming in the arctic and swimming from Europe to Asia. The brothers’ website details their successful swims to date:
“To date their big swims include: world-first crossings of the three most powerful maelstroms (the Corryvreckan, Saltstraumen and Moskstraumen), a 9-day/90-mile River Eden swim from source to mouth, a 5-hour/13C swim the full length of Loch Broom, and a crossing of the Turkish Hellespont, from Europe to Asia. “
Not only do the brothers enjoy swimming in the open water, they feel that it’s important. “It’s incredibly important that people try to reclaim that joy (of being outdoors),” stated one of the brothers in the film.
The film is a beautifully-shot six-and-a-half-minute tribute to open water swimming and the bond between three brothers. The film’s message is that there is more to life than financial success and always needing to be connected to technology. There are very real benefits that come from connecting and experiencing what nature has to offer.
